The Breath that Remembers
Aug 31, 2025
Last week I got to be the guest on OrTalk with my dear friend and teacher, Rebbetzin Orit Esther Riter. The episode is called The Breath that Remembers, and it's probably the most perfect title for an Elul episode.
Because if you step outside right now, there’s memory in the breeze.
Elul is that strange hinge between seasons, when the heavy, stagnant heat of summer starts loosening its grip and suddenly the air moves again. It carries with it that old body memory of back to school, with sharpened pencils and sweaters not yet needed but waiting in the closet. The heartbeat quickens with new year vision, while the stomach drops with the reminder that the Yamim Noraim are just around the corner.
And all of that, the mix of excitement, fear, and renewal, is held in the breath.
Breath is the field of our lived experience. It remembers things we’ve long forgotten and holds the shape of what we’ve survived. My own mission, day by day, is simply to take in more of it. To trust that the inhale has enough space for all that is stirring, and that the exhale will carry me through whatever I can’t yet name.
We’re in the middle of weekly Vessel podcast drops right now, leading up to our presale September 14-16 (mark your calendar if you want the early discount!), but this episode is a bonus gift you can listen to right away.
And maybe that’s perfect timing, it’s an extended holiday weekend, the kids are home, their schedules are upside down, and we could all use a gentle reminder to just breathe.

If you’ve been following the Vessel podcast series, this one is a little different. More about breath, a little more personal, more aligned with Elul. It might just be the pause you need before the whirlwind of fall begins.
Our next Vessel episode, with Pessy Schwartz of Reclaim Womanhood airs Wednesday!
