Want to. Need to. Choose to.

choice parenting sleep vessel Oct 21, 2025

Remember when we slept till noon?

Like when we were teens and had no pressing reason to get out of bed?
Or maybe when there were too many reasons to get out of bed and we got overwhelmed, rolled over, and went back to sleep?

Yeah, me too.
Very, very vaguely.
Like it was something I dreamed a long time ago.

Remember what it was like to climb out of bed when we wanted to?
When the covers were sticky, the sheets too hot,
and we were hungry enough to go look for cookies or last night’s leftovers?

One of my teens asked me if I've ever slept in.

I said, “Sure. When I was your age. I used to stay up reading all night
and sleep until I was ready to wake up and read some more.”

He rolled his eyes and asked if I ever do that as an adult.

I shrugged and said, “Not since Deeds was born.”
(Deeds is famously the child who refuses to sleep.)

But I did, actually. I stayed in bed as an adult.
Back when I had no kids, no job, no idea what I was capable of
or what I wanted from life.

It was not the best time.

With time, parenting, and responsibility, things changed.

I needed to get up.
There were kids to feed, buses to catch, a job to punch in for.
That was the whirlwind of my twenties and early thirties.

But he wasn't happy with that answer.
“Come on Ma, you get up way earlier than you need to.
You're up before Deeds every single day.”

He's right. I am.

These days my alarm goes off at 5:45 AM.

It is not when I want to get up.
It is not even when I need to get up.
It is when I choose to get up.

I choose to sneak out of bed at the crack of dawn
because there's something I desire more these days than sleep.

Time to talk to Hashem.
Time to pray for my kids.
Time to learn.
Time to breathe and have a coffee and remember who I am before the world starts asking me to be everything else.

It doesn't always work out for me.
Deeds has this uncanny ability to sense when I leave my room and usually finds me just a few stolen moments into my day.

And there are definitely mornings I hit snooze for an extra fifteen minutes.

But even those days are a gift.
Because getting out of bed is a choice, one I was not always ready to make.

There was a time when I got up because I had to.
Now I get up because I want to see who I'm becoming.

That is what I sincerely pray Vessel will give you.
